10th Anniversary of Calamitous Citizens United Decision

Next Tuesday, January 21, 2020, marks the tenth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s calamitous Citizens United v. FEC decision. In this decision the court ruled that corporations have the same Constitutional rights as real people and struck down spending limits in political campaigns. This and other court rulings mean that today our government answers more and more to powerful special interests, including global corporations and the very wealthy, and less and less to us, the people.
What is needed is the We the People Amendment. This twenty-eighth amendment to the United States Constitution shall ensure that the rights protected by the Constitution are the rights of individual human beings only and that money spent to influence elections is not protected free speech and can be limited by law.
Please give our Representative in Congress, Lori Trahan, a call (202 225 3411) to thank her for her support of H. J. Resolution 48 which is the version of the We the People Amendment currently before the House of Representatives. No such bill has yet been filed in the United States Senate and I ask you to call our U.S. Senators, Ed Markey (617 565 8519) and Elizabeth Warren (617 565 3170), to get the ball rolling. Ten years of Citizens United is enough!
