Conant Gallery Displays Painting of Stories that Sustain Us
Artist Janet Hulings Bleicken's exhibit "Coyote, Turtle, the Ark and the Dove," is on display through Feb. 28 at Lawrence Academy's Conant Gallery in Richardson-Mees Performing Arts Center (off Rt. 40). Hours are Mon. - Fri. 9-a.m.-5 p.m. and Sat. and Sun. noon - 4 p.m.
In the years since graduating from art school, Bleicken has often returned to the subject of what we believe. She is fascinated with ideas and themes that persist throughout human history and inform and uphold our religions and mythologies.
The paintings on display at Lawrence Academy begin with a variety of stories drawn from native peoples of North America. She compares them with corresponding and conflicting ideas from European traditions ranging from Greek and Roman cultures through Judaic and Christian religions.
